Riot erupts in Oslo after controversial finish
The Central Division matchup between the Oslo Vikings and the Moscow Red Army descended into absolute chaos, ending with 53 fan injuries and a $1.5 million fine for Moscow.
Tensions boiled over in the second half when Moscow fullback Evgeny Karpov dragged Oslo defensive end Aslak Dokken into the end zone for a touchdown and emphatically spiked the ball in his face. The scuffle that followed produced four unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, including one on Moscow linebacker Andrei Koralev, who left the sideline to join the fray.
Later, Oslo fullback Evald Borgny delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit on Moscow safety Raskov Skorov, handing Skorov his 21st career concussion.
The breaking point came on the game’s second-to-last play. Oslo running back Torfinn Erstad was centering the ball for a game-winning field goal when Koralev hit him with an illegal drop tackle, causing a hip flexor injury and sprained ankle that will sideline Erstad next week. Koralev was ejected for his second unsportsmanlike penalty, and Oslo’s crowd erupted, pelting the field with mugs and corndogs while screaming threats.
Oslo’s kicker drilled the 27-yard field goal with three seconds left to make it 16-13, but referee Tim Sturgen immediately signaled the game over, denying Moscow any chance to return the kickoff.
Moscow ownership refused to make any players available after the game, releasing only a single statement: “The Red Army doesn’t forget.”
